Bola Oyebamiji, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Osun State, has kicked off his campaign season with a royal visit — heading straight to the palace of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, to seek traditional blessings ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The visit, which took place on Monday at the historic Ooni’s palace in Ile-Ife, was not just symbolic. Oyebamiji revealed that President Bola Tinubu personally advised him to seek the throne’s blessings before launching his campaign.
“I informed Mr President of my intention to visit your palace, and he advised me to do so, stressing the importance of blessings from this throne,” Oyebamiji said during the visit.
Speaking before the Ooni, the APC candidate framed his ambition around service rather than politics.
“We are here to seek your royal blessings and prayers as we prepare to begin our campaign. I will not betray the trust of the people and will work for the progress of Ife and Osun State,” he said.
The Ooni, however, used the occasion to remind politicians of the boundaries of traditional authority — and the responsibility that comes with seeking royal favour.
“An Oba belongs to all and must remain above politics. Unity is key, and grievances must be resolved through dialogue,” Oba Ogunwusi said.
He added pointedly: “After receiving blessings, it is important to justify them with good deeds.”
Oyebamiji was accompanied by his running mate Kayode Adereti, Osun APC chairman Tajudeen Lawal, and other party leaders. The delegation was also received by the Alapomu of Apomu, Oba Kayode Afolabi, who offered prayers for a peaceful election.
The Osun governorship election is scheduled for August 15, 2026, with the APC looking to reclaim the state from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
