Former Minority Leader of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Maria Nwachi, has officially declared her intention to contest the 2027 National Assembly elections to represent Ebonyi South Senatorial District in the Senate.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, the former lawmaker explained that she delayed making her ambition public because she had been consulting widely on the best political platform for her campaign.
Nwachi, who represented the Afikpo North-East constituency between 2015 and 2019, confirmed that she intends to contest under the Peoples Democratic Party.
According to her, the decision to enter the race was motivated by a desire to provide stronger, more effective representation for the district’s residents.
She said her legislative focus would be on community-driven leadership and policies that improve the lives of ordinary citizens.
“This is to inform the people of Ebonyi South District and my supporters that I am contesting to represent them at the Red Chambers of the National Assembly,” she said.
“The objective is to make laws that will change the narratives.”
Nwachi also stressed the importance of accountability, transparency, and inclusive representation in leadership.
“I possess the competence, credibility, and capacity to deliver results,” she stated.
“Leadership must be measured by its impact on the people.”
The former lawmaker added that her ambition is rooted in a desire to unite and empower the people of Ebonyi South while ensuring their concerns are adequately represented at the national level.
“I am contesting this election to touch lives,” she said.
“I am running to restore transparency and accountability in the zone.”
Her declaration adds to the growing political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with consultations and alignments already intensifying across several political parties and regions in Nigeria.
Maria Nwachi is among several female politicians seeking greater representation in Nigeria’s legislative system, where conversations around women’s participation in politics continue to gain attention.
