Nigerian actress, model, and reality television star Beverly Osu has opened up about the public perception of her as a controversial figure, insisting that she has never intentionally provoked reactions or created unnecessary controversy.
Speaking during an appearance on the Creativtea Podcast, Beverly reflected on her childhood, her strong Catholic upbringing, and the unexpected path her life eventually took.
The actress revealed that she was raised in Lagos, spending her early years in Surulere before moving to Yaba and Ojuelegba.
“I grew up in Lagos, in Surulere, and from Surulere I moved to Yaba, Ojuelegba. I am a Lagos girl,” she said.
Beverly also disclosed that she attended Daughters of Divine Love Juniorate in Enugu and once seriously considered becoming a Reverend Sister due to her admiration for the discipline and lifestyle of Catholic clergy.
“I was meant to be a Reverend Sister. I wanted to really be a Reverend Sister. Now, I am doing God’s work in other ways,” she said.
Explaining what attracted her to religious life, Beverly said she admired the cleanliness, discipline, and appearance of priests and Reverend Sisters.
“I love how they dress. Because I am meticulous and very neat, I just loved how clean the priests and Reverend Sisters were. Literally, that was it,” she added.
The former Big Brother Africa star also addressed the criticism she faced over a previous photoshoot in which she dressed as a Reverend Sister. This creative expression generated mixed reactions online.
According to her, there was no intention to mock religion or stir controversy, adding that her Catholic background has always been genuine.
“I grew up in a very Catholic-oriented home. This is not just being Catholic in Africa, far and wide. People just read meaning to it. Nigerians just like to talk. It wasn’t a big deal. It was just arty,” she explained.
Addressing the “controversial” label that has followed her over the years, Beverly maintained that she has been authentic and has never intended to cause harm or attract negative attention.
“I have never meant any harm. I have never done anything with the mindset to be controversial. I just came across the word ‘controversial’. People say I am controversial, but I am just being me,” she said.
Beverly Osu first gained widespread attention after her appearance on Big Brother Africa: The Chase in 2013 and has since built a career in acting, modelling, and entertainment.
Her latest comments offer deeper insight into her personality, revealing a woman who sees herself not as controversial but as someone who has consistently chosen to express herself honestly despite public opinion.
