Will Smith has found his co-star. AnnaSophia Robb has officially signed on to star opposite him in Supermax, the Amazon MGM Studios thriller directed by David Gordon Green, marking the actor’s first major casting addition since the project was announced.
Robb will play the film’s female co-lead opposite Smith, taking on the role of a young FBI agent partnered with Smith’s character, an investigator named Rex.
The story follows the two agents as they head into the depths of a supermax prison to investigate a murder, a setup built for the kind of claustrophobic, twist-heavy tension that defines the genre.
It marks Smith’s first non-franchise studio feature in some time, following his long run with the Bad Boys series.
The film carries real financial weight. Amazon MGM Studios locked down the project for a reported $70 million back in May, and rather than a traditional theatrical rollout, the studio closed a worldwide distribution deal to bring the film to Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories, bypassing cinemas entirely.
That decision has raised some eyebrows given Smith’s box office track record. Still, with the reach a Prime Video release affords, the studio appears to be betting on global streaming numbers over opening-weekend box office prestige.
Behind the camera, the pairing brings its own layer of interest. David Gordon Green is coming off directing Scarpetta for Prime Video, the Nicole Kidman-led crime series, and the screenplay is written by David Weil and David J. Rosen, the duo behind the television series Hunters and Invasion.
Supermax also reunites Green with Rosen from their work on Apple TV’s Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, giving the project a working creative shorthand before a single scene has been shot.
For Robb, the casting continues a genuine resurgence. She earned some of her strongest reviews in years for her role in Netflix’s Rebel Ridge.
This slow-burn thriller reminded audiences why she was once one of Hollywood’s most reliable young talents, having broken out with roles in Bridge to Terabithia, Soul Surfer, and the Sex and the City prequel The Carrie Diaries, where she played the title role.
Supermax slots in just ahead of I Play Rocky, the Sylvester Stallone origin biopic in which she plays his first wife, Sasha Czack, giving her two high-profile Amazon MGM titles landing in close succession.
That project, Peter Farrelly’s Rocky origin story, is already generating early awards-season buzz ahead of an expected Toronto International Film Festival premiere.
The reaction to her casting has been notably warm within industry circles, with several reports framing it as a well-earned moment for an actress whose career has spent years quietly rebuilding momentum outside the spotlight her childhood roles once gave her.
Production timelines and a release date haven’t been confirmed yet. Still, with Green behind the camera, Weil and Rosen’s script in hand, and two leads carrying real momentum into the project, Supermax has quickly become one of the more closely watched streaming thrillers heading toward production.
