Super Falcons midfielder Esther Okoronkwo has broken her silence after receiving racist abuse on social media following her comments about the theft of cash from several Nigerian players ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The AFC Toronto star had earlier revealed that cash was stolen from her and some teammates while they were staying at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca before the team relocated to Rabat for their Group C matches.
She identified goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Michelle Alozie, Halimatu Ayinde, Joy Omewa and Osinachi Ohale as some of the affected players, with reports indicating that more than $1,000 was taken in total.
Following her revelation, Okoronkwo’s Instagram page was flooded with racist comments, including monkey emojis and other offensive messages directed at the Nigerian international.
Rather than respond in anger, the 29-year-old shared a message of resilience.
“Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that. We move forward with pride, unity and determination. See you on the pitch,” she wrote on Instagram.
The incident has since taken a fresh turn after reports emerged that Moroccan authorities arrested a hotel employee in connection with the theft. According to police, investigators recovered the alleged stolen money after identifying a suspect who worked at the hotel.
However, authorities have not officially confirmed that the arrest is directly linked to the Super Falcons’ complaint, even though the timing closely matches the ongoing investigation.
Nigerian journalist and former Super Eagles media officer Colin Udoh also confirmed that a suspect had confessed and is expected to make full restitution while legal proceedings continue.
He urged FIFA and CAF to investigate the racist abuse targeted at Okoronkwo, describing it as unacceptable.
Despite the off-field controversy, the Super Falcons remain focused on their quest for a record-extending WAFCON title, with Nigeria set to begin its Group C campaign against Malawi before taking on Zambia and Egypt.
