Temilade Openiyi was (born June 11, 1995), in Lagos, Nigeria, to a British-Nigerian father and a Nigerian mother. The family moved to the United Kingdom shortly after Tems was born.

Tems’ parents separated when she was only five years old, and they divorced. As a result, Tems and her mother relocated to Ilupeju, Nigeria, and then to Lekki before settling in Ajah.

Because the singer is very private about her personal life, she has avoided disclosing any information or the names of her parents and siblings. Tems also has an older brother, the name of whom is unknown.

Moving on to her education, she first attended Dowen College in the Lekki area of Lagos, and for her Tertiary education, she proceeded to South Africa. She also enrolled at a University in Johannesburg, South Africa from where she earned a degree in Economics. While studying in school she developed an interest in music and was discovered by her music teacher. From that point forward, she learned to play the piano and her brother’s guitar.

On September 25 2020, Tems eventually dropped her debut EP, For Broken Ears, which she produced. The extended play quickly succeeded in Nigeria, Europe, and North America. The lead single from the EP titled Damages became a hit by surpassing her success with the previous track Try Me.

In the same year, the fellow rapper Wizkid teamed up with Tems to release his hit song Essence, which became the most successful track from his Made In Lagos album

That song became the turning point of Tems career as she ranked on the No.1 spot on various charts and earned her several accolades, including Billboard Hot 100, a Soul Train Music Award, BBC 1Xtra Airplay Chart, a Soul Train Music Award, 2 NAACP Image Awards, and a Grammy Award nomination in the category of Best Global Music Performance.

Moreover, the song Essence grabbed the attention of legendary Canadian-American singer and rapper Drake, who invited Tems to collaborate with him. Drake teamed up with Tems to record his Certified Lover Boy album’s single titled Fountain. That collaborative song was a hit earning Tems second Billboard Hot 100 entry.


On September 2, 2021, Tems released her second EP, If Orange Was A Place, which includes the commercially hit single Crazy Tings, peaking at #3 on the UK Afrobeats chart.

The song was released under RCA Records and produced by Guilty Beatz. The extended play reached the top 10 on the Billboard World Albums chart and #17 on the Hot R&B Songs chart. Just before the release of this EP, Tems got an opportunity to sign a deal with a popular record label named RCA Records.

Her biggest controversy in the entertainment industry was when she was arrested in Uganda for defying the COVID-19 lockdown protocols in the country. The arrest came on the 12th of December 2020 as she was arrested alongside fast-rising singer Omah Lay.
