Media Controversy
My experience at Isale Eko birthed ‘Gangs of Lagos’ —Osiberu
Jade Osiberu has explained that her experience at Isale Eko while shooting another movie called Giddy Up initiated the thoughts around ‘Gangs of Lagos.’
Jade told journalists at a press conference in Lagos recently that they became characters in the story after she saw a mother cooking dinner and feeding her children.
She imagined what it would be like to be stuck in Isale Eko, desiring more for herself and her children.
According to her, she intended for the film to impact people who live lives that others do not understand, calling it a revelatory experience.
As a result, Osiberu stated that the film is about empathy, love, and dreams.
“Twelve years ago, while I was shooting a series called Giddy Up in Isale Eko, across the window from where we were, I could see into another building’s window section and the people living there.
“Immediately, they became characters in my story. I saw a mother cooking dinner and feeding her children.
“I thought about what it would feel like to live in Isale Eko, stuck there yet desiring more for yourself and your children.
“I wanted to humanize people who live lives we don’t understand. It’s a revelatory film. It shows political thuggery. It’s a story about empathy, dreams, and love. I also hope people are entertained.” She said.
Why I featured Pasuma, Zlatan in ‘Gangs of Lagos’- Jade Osiberu
She said:
“Pasuma has a long history of acting. Because we shot in Isale Eko, who else? Pasuma fits into that world. When we were shooting in Isale Eko, he was one of the people we had to escort out with an army because they wouldn’t let him go. After all, he belongs to the people.
“Zlatan was one that perhaps people wouldn’t have seen coming. But I was surfing the internet, and I have just been watching his interviews. Something said this guy could do it. So we had him in the room for a little audition, and he was terrific. He attended all our stunt training. He did his stunts in the film, in fights. In everything, he was superb”.
