Early Life

Nelly Cheboi (born November 26, 1992). She grew up in poverty in the rural village of Mogotio in Kenya. She received a full scholarship to study computer science at Augustana College in Illinois in 2012.

Education

She graduated in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics and computer science.

Career

Nelly Cheboi was hardened for life growing up in terrible poverty in a rural household in Kenya’s Baringo County, recalling “stomach-churning hunger” at night.

It also helped her determine what she wanted to do with her life. So she put her head down, worked hard in school, won a scholarship to a university in the United States, and lifted her family out of poverty.

Many years later, Cheboi, 29, left a well-paying position in the United States to found TechLit Africa, a non-profit that recycles obsolete computers and IT technology, develops computer labs in schools across Kenya, and teaches children the skills they need to face the digital world with confidence.

During her junior year of college, Cheboi founded Zawadi Yetu, a school in Kenya. She began transporting donated computers from the United States to Kenya in 2018. After resigning from their employment, she and another software programmer, Tyler Cinnamon, created the NGO TechLit Africa in 2019.

The organization, located in Kenya at Zawadi Yetu, teaches fundamental computer skills to 4000 youngsters aged 5-14 and redistributes recycled technology to enable the establishment of computer labs in African schools. They have established ten computer laboratories in rural Kenya as of 2022, with plans to build 100 more.

Students learn technology in exciting and engaging ways while expressing their creativity through Cheboi’s initiative, as the consistent construction of TechLit Labs in schools supports positive outcomes in poverty eradication.

The first benefit is that information technology has raised community awareness and literacy levels, beginning with Zawadi Primary School, one of the schools with which TechLit laboratories collaborated.

Cheboi was voted CNN’s Hero of the Year in December 2022, catapulting her company and its cause to international fame.

Personal Life

She met her now-husband, Tyler Cinnamon when she graduated in 2018. Tyler Cinnamon is a software developer and the co-founder of TechLitAfrica, a non-profit dedicated to boosting technology literacy and alleviating poverty in Africa.

She Grew Up In Poverty

Nelly Cheboi said:

“I grew up in rural Kenya in poverty, going to bed hungry or school barefoot, and I became motivated to find sustainable solutions towards poverty,” Cheboi tells TRT World.

“I mean, these kids deserve a better life than what I experienced. That was enough motivation to start TechLit”, short for technology literate.

Operation Kick Out Poverty

The soft-spoken tech guru realized that to kick poverty from her village; she had to start with its youth.

“Most people don’t know how to send an email, but it’s not their fault. So, what we decided to do instead is work with kids. How can we incorporate this as part of their growing up and schooling? How can we teach them all these skills? It became easier to go into existing schools and have these classes as part of their day-to-day activities,” says Cheboi.

More To Come, Cheboi Says.

Her students’ experiences motivate Cheboi to continue creating more opportunities for children in rural areas.

“I see myself in these kids, but with more resources. These children are like any other kids living in privileged cities. They deserve to learn how to make money online, create a brand and make something out of their lives,” says Cheboi.

Cheboi’s initiative has seen over 4,000 students benefit from her program, and ten schools in Baringo County have well-equipped computer labs.

Government officials at both the local and national levels recognize Cheboi’s efforts and the positive impact of technology in helping reduce poverty in the community.
