Seun Kuti has responded to Ayo Makun, often known as AY, a prominent Nigerian stand-up comedian, for rejecting his national honor medal.
Ayo Makun responded in a tweet to trolls who questioned him for not rejecting the government’s honor.
The father of two stated that receiving a national honor is the highest kind of acknowledgement for one’s services to country development, and he is more than glad to accept the honor.
“Those of you shaming or urging me to reject ‘A National Honour’ are clearly missing a critical point,” he tweeted.
Our country is larger and more significant than any president or political party that bestows it. National honor is the highest honor that somebody can receive for their services to country development.
So my commitment is to a country to which I have paid my fair share, and I am delighted to be rewarded by the same nation.”
In response, Seun Kuti turned to Instagram to criticize Ayo Makun for explaining why he received the prize.
According to Seun Kuti, the National Award is based on a nomination by a presidential committee and approval by the president. He mocked the comedian as he accepted his ‘Buhari’ award.
“Let me reiterate, No be a public opinion poll them take dey choose national award na by presidential committee then the president will accept the nomination of certain people. In as much as it’s a national honour, it’s a presidential appointment. Biko, receive ur BUHARI award and stop to dey Shalaye!!!”
