Inter Milan continued their pursuit of the Serie A title with a hard-fought 2-1 win against Genoa on Monday night.
Kristjan Asllani’s early goal and Alexis Sanchez’s controversial penalty conversion were enough for the Nerazzurri to take all three points.
The victory extended Inter’s winning streak to 12 games in 2024, while also making them the favourites at the top of the table, 15 points ahead.
This victory was especially noteworthy because it came on the heels of Juventus’ loss to Napoli, giving Inter an extra boost in their title chase.
Despite missing key players like Alessandro Bastoni, Hakan Calhanoglu, and Juan Cuadrado due to suspension or injury, Inter maintained control for much of the match.
However, Genoa, who had lost only one of their last 11 Serie A games, put up a strong fight but fell short at the end of the day.
The game was not without controversy, as Inter’s second goal came from a penalty decision that was highly debated.
The referee awarded a penalty to Inter after Nicolò Barella was brought down in the box, a decision that was upheld after a VAR review.
Genoa managed to pull one back through a fine Johan Vasquez volley, but Inter held on to secure the victory.
