Lt. Gen Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, stated on Tuesday that the military will not respond to efforts to overturn democratically elected governments in order to appease certain interests.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the COAS Combined 2nd and 3rd Quarters Conference in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Lagbaja stated that the cry for military takeover was primarily coming from young Nigerians who had never lived through Nigeria’s extensive military rule.
He emphasised that the the officers were not willing to forfeit the “new prestige” it had diligently established over the previous 25 years by permitting safe democratic administration.
“The Nigerian Army will not allow itself to be used to undemocratically sail some interests to power. As the Service that received the most image bashing as a fallout of previous military interventions in Nigeria,the Nigerian Army is not poised to losing the new prestige it has painstakingly built in the past 25 years,secure, and united,” he said.
