‘I’m not an Afrobeats artiste’ – Flavour distances self from music genre

Nigerian star, Flavour to headline Afrobeat Music Festival in USVI

Chinedu Okoli, also known as Flavour, a prominent Nigerian singer, has made it clear that he does not consider himself to be part of the Afrobeats genre.

In a recent interview on the ‘Afrobeats Podcast’ with Shopsydoo, he mentioned that he is unconcerned about not receiving credit for the worldwide popularity of Nigeria’s Afrobeats genre, as he does not identify as an Afrobeats artist.

Despite his significant contributions to African music, Flavour feels overlooked by the media, which predominantly focuses on Afrobeats as the representative genre from Africa.

“I don’t feel bad when I’m not given credit on the global rise of African music because what the media is talking about is Afrobeats. I’m not an Afrobeats artiste,” he said.

“What I’m doing is African music. There are guys like Fally Ipupa, Diamond Platinumz who are pushing African music globally that are not Afrobeats artists.

“Most times, the media just talks about Afrobeats. They are not talking about African music. If you talk about African music, of course, you should mention my name.”

The High-life crooner urged the media to promote not just Afrobeats but other popular African genres.
