Rio Ferdinand has disclosed that his wife was furious with him after he answered a phone call at 1 am with his former Manchester United teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo.
In the summer of 2021, Ronaldo was on the verge of leaving Juventus after three years in Serie A.
There were strong rumors linking the five-time Ballon d’Or winner with a return to Manchester to play under Pep Guardiola.
Ultimately, Ronaldo did make a comeback to United, but his stint lasted less than 18 months due to a falling-out with manager Erik ten Hag. He was eventually released as a free agent.
Rio Ferdinand, speaking on the Portuguese’s YouTube channel, said: “We spoke on the phone when you were going to go and sign at Man United when you were negotiating to come back, and my wife wanted to kill me!
“It was 1 o’clock in the morning and you rang me: ‘Rio what’s going on, can we sort this out?’ You ended up signing for United. Initially, that must have been a beautiful thing for you because I remember on the phone you sounded so happy. Then obviously it went a bit sour.”
