Wizkid’s revelation about leaving Banky W’s record label, Empire Mates Entertainment (EME), with no money sheds light on the financial and professional hurdles artists often face in the music industry.
In a throwback interview, the global music icon, whose real name is Ayodeji Balogun, detailed his experience, emphasizing that despite his fame, he exited the label under difficult circumstances.
Wizkid joined EME in 2009 and rose to prominence with his debut album Superstar (2011), featuring hits like “Holla at Your Boy” and “Pakurumo.” These successes solidified his position as a leading figure in Nigerian music. However, his journey away from EME was marked by challenges, as he disclosed:
“I had to leave EME record label with zero naira. Everybody knows the story.”
The struggles faced by Wizkid align with broader issues in the music industry, where disputes over contracts and financial mismanagement are common. A similar controversy recently emerged with Shallipopi, a rising star who terminated his deal with Dapper Records, citing financial exploitation, including excessive royalties taken from artists under the label.
Wizkid’s resilience and eventual rise to global stardom serve as an inspiration, highlighting the importance of perseverance despite systemic challenges in the industry. His candid reflections also underscore ongoing issues with artist-label relationships, a topic that continues to gain attention within the entertainment sector.
