Brazil’s ex-president, Bolsonaro faces 28 years imprisonment

The former Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, is facing potentially up to 28 years in prison after being charged with allegedly orchestrating a far-right conspiracy to seize power through a military coup.

Brazil’s attorney general, Paulo Gonet, has brought charges against Bolsonaro and his key allies, with experts suggesting he could receive a lengthy prison sentence if found guilty.

Accusations against him include involvement in an attempted coup and armed criminal association, leading to the violent disruption of the country’s rule of law.

Despite the charges, Bolsonaro has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

He served as Brazil’s president from 2019 to 2022 and is accused in an 884-page federal police report of plotting to prevent the left-wing candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from winning the 2022 presidential election.
