"Due Process was not followed, I remain the Speaker" - Obasa

The political crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly has deepened as Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached Speaker, forcefully resumed office on Thursday, insisting that he was never lawfully removed.

Obasa, who was impeached on January 13, arrived at the Assembly complex under heavy security provided by police and State Security Service (SSS) operatives. Speaking to reporters, he maintained:

“Impeachment or removal is democratic and constitutional, but it must follow due process.”

Tension in Lagos Assembly

Obasa’s dramatic return coincided with the withdrawal of security aides assigned to Mojisola Meranda, the Speaker who replaced him.

At noon on Thursday, Obasa took over the Speaker’s Office, further escalating the ongoing leadership battle.

With both Obasa and Meranda claiming the speakership, the Lagos State House of Assembly remains embroiled in crisis, with no clear resolution in sight.
