Atalanta manager Gian Pero Gasperini has decided not to extend his contract with the Serie A club beyond June 2026, as reported by Soccernet.
His announcement comes after Atalanta’s elimination from the Champions League by Club Brugge, with the coach making headlines for his post-match comments.
In the first leg, Atalanta lost 2-1 to Club Brugge in Belgium, and in the second leg, they conceded three first-half goals at home, effectively ending their chances in the competition.
Despite Ademola Lookman pulling one goal back and attempting a penalty that he missed, Gasperini publicly criticized him as the worst penalty taker he has ever seen.
Following Gasperini’s harsh words, Lookman defended himself on social media, claiming he was designated the penalty taker. Despite efforts by the club to reconcile the coach and Lookman, the situation seems irreparable.
Gasperini, who has been with Atalanta since 2016, is expected to leave the club either this summer through a mutual termination or when his contract expires.
Lookman is also almost certain to move on at the end of this season.
