Senate President Godswill Akpabio is set to temporarily step down next week as the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions investigates allegations of sexual harassment against him.
According to Sahara Reporters, after Akpabio is cleared, the committee will recommend the indefinite suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan until the end of her tenure in 2027.
Akpabio and Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan are expected to appear before the committee to address the accusations.
Akpoti-Uduaghan had alleged that Akpabio made inappropriate advances towards her in December 2023 during a visit to his residence in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, even in the presence of her husband. She has also taken her case to the Inter-Parliamentary Union for further scrutiny.
The Senate investigation, led by Senator Neda Imasuen’s committee, is expected to clear Akpabio and push forward Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension. Sources indicate that the suspension would last until the end of her Senate term.

This move follows Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal action against the Senate for disregarding a court order that temporarily halted disciplinary actions against her.
Despite this, the Senate sealed her office and suspended her, leading her to file for contempt of court.
As legal battles unfold, the Senate is expected to finalize her suspension in the coming days.
