A$AP Rocky has revealed that his gun assault trial affected his music-making abilities.
The rapper, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, was acquitted of assault charges in February in Los Angeles. He is now back in the studio working on new music inspired by recent events.
“I’m writing about these past four or five years that I had this over me, and it’s been kind of handicapping me,” he said.
A$AP Rocky went on to note that he learned a lot of lessons over the course of the trial and has had “trust issues” for a while.
“I can’t necessarily blame it on my last situation. But what I did learn is you’ve gotta accept that everybody’s not good people; you’re not gonna run into a solid person every time. Not everybody’s gonna handle situations like you,” the 36-year-old continued.
“Once you accept that you’re not responsible for nobody’s actions but yours… That’s where I’m at – like, ‘Yo, focus on your own actions.’ Because I ain’t perfect. I’m human too, and we all f**k up.”
In addition to his music career, A$AP Rocky has been in a relationship with Rihanna since 2020 and they share two sons together. At the 2025 Met Gala, Rihanna announced that she is expecting their third child.
In a recent interview, A$AP Rocky also discussed his upcoming movie “Highest 2 Lowest” in which he stars alongside Denzel Washington. Directed by Spike Lee, the film will debut at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
