Taiwo Awoniyi in Induced Coma After Surgery for Gruesome Abdominal Injury

Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is currently in an induced coma following the first phase of emergency surgery for a severe abdominal injury sustained during his club’s dramatic 2-2 draw against Leicester City at the City Ground on Sunday.

The 27-year-old Nigerian forward suffered the injury in the 88th minute while attempting to connect with a cross from Anthony Elanga, crashing hard into the goalpost. Though he received treatment and briefly continued playing, Awoniyi appeared to be in significant discomfort before the final whistle.

Following the incident, he was rushed to a nearby hospital and underwent the first phase of surgery on Monday night. Nottingham Forest has since confirmed that Awoniyi is “recovering well” and is set to undergo a second surgical procedure on Wednesday.

In an official club statement, Forest emphasized the severity of the incident, calling it “a powerful reminder of the physical risks in the game and why a player’s health and wellbeing must always come first.”

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has reportedly voiced concerns over the handling of the situation by the club’s medical team. Sources say Marinakis had a heated exchange with manager Nuno Espirito Santo after the match and is now receiving real-time updates on Awoniyi’s condition.

Awoniyi, who joined Forest from Union Berlin in June 2022, has been an instrumental part of the squad. On Sunday, he had only been on the pitch for five minutes — coming on as a substitute for Ibrahim Sangare — when the tragic incident occurred.

The football world has since rallied behind the Nigerian star, with well-wishers from around the globe sending messages of hope and support. As fans and teammates await further updates, all eyes are on Awoniyi’s upcoming surgery and his road to recovery.
