Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo has conferred honorary citizenship and an ambassadorial role on British-Nigerian boxing champion Anthony Joshua.
Joshua, currently on a homecoming tour of Africa, visited the Jubilee House in Accra on Tuesday, where he met with President Akufo-Addo. In a video shared on social media, the President praised the two-time former unified world heavyweight champion, stating that Ghana would be honoured to make him a citizen.
“We want to also make you an ambassador for tourism in Ghana and an ambassador for boxing and sports. So we’ll have some paperwork to do,” Akufo-Addo said.
Joshua, 34, smiled and gratefully accepted the offers. “Thank you so much, sir. It’s a pleasure. I accept,” he responded.
During his Ghana visit, Joshua toured various locations including schools, training centres, and his father’s hometown of Sagamu in Ogun State, Nigeria, to inspire young people and promote African heritage.
The British-born boxer, who has always proudly spoken of his African roots, is also preparing for a major boxing showdown against the winner of the highly anticipated Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk bout, expected later this year or in early 2025.
