Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski has announced a dramatic break from international football, declaring he will no longer represent Poland while Michał Probierz remains in charge of the national team.
In a strongly worded statement posted to his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, the 36-year-old forward cited a complete breakdown of trust with the current coach as the reason for his decision:
“Considering the circumstances and the loss of trust in the Polish National Team coach, I have decided to step back from playing for the Polish National Team as long as he remains the coach.
I hope I will have the chance to play again for the best fans in the world.”
The statement comes after Lewandowski reportedly withdrew from Poland’s June training camp, citing mental fatigue. He also missed the team’s recent friendly win over Moldova, and will not be part of the squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Finland on June 10.
The development marks a major blow for Poland, as Lewandowski is not just their captain, but also all-time top scorer and a national icon.
Whether this is a temporary rift or the beginning of an early retirement from the international stage remains to be seen — but for now, one of football’s most decorated strikers is stepping back from the national spotlight.
