A photo of Seyi Tinubu, son of Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, posing with American rap mogul Jay-Z has ignited widespread debate on social media.
The image was first shared by content creator Lege Miami, who captioned it:
“Legendary movement @jayz With my Seyi mi.”
While some Nigerians hailed the photo as a potential networking breakthrough and a sign of global influence, many others criticized its timing. The post surfaced on June 12, Nigeria’s Democracy Day, a date set aside to reflect on the country’s democratic struggles and sacrifices.
Critics argued that Seyi Tinubu’s appearance in the photo was tone-deaf and insensitive in light of the nation’s pressing issues such as rising inflation, fuel scarcity, insecurity, and unemployment.
One online user wrote:
“On a day we should remember the price of democracy, Seyi Tinubu is busy snapping with Jay-Z. Completely disconnected from the reality at home.”
However, a few defenders viewed the moment as a valuable connection for Nigeria on the global stage, suggesting it could open doors to international collaborations.
The post has since sparked intense debate about the roles and responsibilities of public figures, especially those connected to political power, during national moments of reflection.
