Senate President Godswill Akpabio has warmly received Governor Umo Eno at his Uyo residence following the latter’s high-profile defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a video that surfaced online, the two Akwa Ibom leaders were seen exchanging heartfelt greetings, with APC supporters cheering as Eno arrived in the company of governors and political allies.
Earlier on Friday, June 6, 2025, Governor Eno officially announced his defection to the APC during a ceremony at the Akwa Ibom Government House. The event was attended by prominent figures including:
-
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos)
-
Governor Bassey Otu (Cross River)
-
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta)
-
Governor Monday Okpebholo (Edo)
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was reportedly monitoring the developments from Lagos, as Eno’s defection marked a strategic win for the APC in the South-South geopolitical zone.
Political Impact of the Defection
With Akwa Ibom now under APC leadership, only Bayelsa and Rivers remain under PDP control in the South-South region. This shift further consolidates the APC’s influence and bolsters its long-term political strategy in the Niger Delta.
Governor Eno stated that his move was driven by a desire to “align with the government at the center” for the sake of development, peace, and prosperity in Akwa Ibom State.
