Veteran Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has come out strongly in support of May Edochie, defending her decision to continue using her estranged husband Yul Edochie’s surname amid ongoing backlash from critics.
In a fiery Instagram post shared on Thursday, July 11, 2025, Rita lambasted those questioning why May still identifies as Queen May Yul-Edochie despite her separation from Yul, insisting that no one has the right to take the name away from her.
“Her name remains Queen May Yul Edochie even after the divorce, because you didn’t give her the name. Iwe wegi oga. Madam see… or better still, go hug transformer,” Rita wrote.
The actress, who has been a consistent supporter of May since her public split from Yul Edochie in 2023, further accused critics of harboring bitterness and misplaced hate, questioning why they would target someone who has done them no wrong.
“Why is there so much hate on someone who doesn’t even know you exist? Pray for your own success and with God, you will definitely shine in your season,” she added.
Rita also used the opportunity to encourage her followers to avoid societal pressure and trust in divine timing, urging them to embrace their unique journey in life.
“Don’t rush or compare your journey to others. Just like the sun and moon, we all have our own unique time to shine… Celebrate small wins, learn from setbacks, and keep moving forward.”
Background
May Edochie and Yul Edochie have been estranged since 2023, following Yul’s controversial decision to marry fellow actress Judy Austin as a second wife. The development sparked widespread public backlash and sympathy for May, who has since grown a strong online following and continues to be referred to as “Queen May Yul-Edochie” by fans and supporters alike.
While May has not made any public statements addressing the criticisms over her continued use of the surname, Rita Edochie’s recent comments make it clear that the actress has no intention of letting online trolls diminish May’s identity or dignity.
Yul Edochie has not responded to the recent controversy.
