“I Am In Charge Here” – Tensions Flare as Senate President Akpabio and Senate Leader Bamidele Clash Over Recess Plans

Tensions Flare as Senate President Akpabio and Senate Leader Bamidele Clash Over Recess Plans

A dramatic confrontation erupted on the floor of the Nigerian Senate on Wednesday evening, as Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele engaged in a heated war of words during plenary.

The clash reportedly occurred during an executive session convened to decide whether the Senate should proceed with its scheduled two-month annual recess or extend its sitting into the following week. What began as a routine discussion quickly turned into a public leadership dispute within the upper chamber.

Disagreement Over Lack of Leadership Coordination

According to sources familiar with the closed-door meeting, the tension stemmed from disagreements among Senate leaders over the recess timing and poor internal coordination. Senator Ali Ndume reportedly criticized the leadership for failing to hold a pre-session meeting to harmonize positions.

“This is not how things should be done,” Ndume was quoted as saying, urging for improved communication and leadership synergy within the Senate hierarchy.

Bamidele: “I Am Frustrated Working Under Akpabio”

In a rare show of internal dissent, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele reportedly expressed frustration over Akpabio’s style of leadership, accusing him of autocratic tendencies and a lack of consultation.

“I am frustrated as Senate Leader working under Senate President Akpabio,” Bamidele allegedly said. “He does not call leadership meetings; he doesn’t consult with anyone. He is autocratic. In fact, I am contemplating resigning as Senate Leader.”

Akpabio Responds: “I Am in Charge Here”

A visibly angry Senate President Akpabio sharply rebuked Bamidele’s comments, asserting his authority in the chamber.

“Senator Opeyemi should sit down! He cannot speak while I am speaking. I am in charge here,” Akpabio fired back. “I have served as Commissioner, two-term Governor, Senate Minority Leader, and a powerful Minister. I know the Senate rules and leadership more than you.”

Near Physical Altercation Averted

Eyewitnesses said the confrontation nearly escalated into a physical altercation between the two senior lawmakers, prompting immediate intervention by fellow senators to de-escalate the situation.
