Veteran Nigerian rapper M.I Abaga has shed light on why many celebrities often choose not to openly criticise politicians, despite mounting pressure from the public.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Outside The Box podcast, Abaga revealed that personal relationships play a big role in such decisions. According to him, when artists have friends in politics, it creates a moral dilemma: criticism may be justified, but loyalty and personal ties often make them hold back.
Sharing his own experience, the rapper recalled a meeting with the governor of Jos that lasted until 2:30 a.m., where they discussed strategies for the creative industry. He explained that such personal interactions can make him reluctant to criticise the governor, not because the critique isn’t valid, but because he also wants to acknowledge the positive side of the relationship.
He explained:
“Most artists have a friend that’s entered into politics, and because you have a friend that’s entered into politics, you might have a closer understanding of an issue. You are also seeing that person receiving insults, and you don’t just want your voice to be part of it.
Like, the governor of Jos, I have my perspective of meeting with him at 2:30 a.m. I’ve sat with him when he was tired, yet stayed up that late to talk to me about my plan for the creative industry.
So if something comes up where he’s getting pushback, I may refrain from speaking — not because I don’t think critique is necessary, but because I also want to speak to the person I met at 2:30 a.m. Sometimes, that person needs a few voices reminding him of the good he’s done.”
M.I concluded by saying that human connection often complicates public criticism, and celebrities, like everyone else, are guided by both values and relationships.
