Newcastle United have hit back at star striker Alexander Isak following his bombshell social media statement on Tuesday night, where he accused the club of breaking promises and declared he no longer intends to play for them.
The 25-year-old Sweden international, who has been heavily linked with a blockbuster move to Liverpool, refused to join Newcastle’s pre-season tour and also sat out their Premier League opener against Aston Villa.
In his post, Isak wrote: “When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue.”
Liverpool had a £110 million bid rejected earlier this summer, with Newcastle adamant they will not sanction his exit.
Responding swiftly, the Magpies issued a late-night statement, denying Isak’s claims and reiterating their stance:
“We are disappointed to have been alerted to a social media post by Alexander Isak this evening. We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer.”
The club further stressed that they must act “in the best interests of Newcastle United, the team, and our supporters,” while making it clear that the conditions for a sale “have not transpired.”
The statement concluded on a conciliatory note, with Newcastle insisting Isak “remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates.”
