Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised concerns over the escalating dispute between Dangote Refinery and oil unions, warning that the standoff could deepen the economic hardship faced by millions of Nigerians if left unresolved.
Obi, in a statement released on Monday, criticized the federal government for failing to take decisive action that could end the impasse between Dangote Refinery and members of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) as well as the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).
“I am worried about the lack of response by the Government to the threat and eventual commencement of a strike by PENGASSAN, which is already having a very adverse impact on Nigerian citizens and the Nigerian economy,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra State governor urged the federal government to intervene swiftly and seek a resolution that balances the interests of Nigerian workers, investors, and citizens.
“I strongly appeal to the Federal Government to intervene quickly to resolve this dispute in a manner that protects the interests of the Nigerian people, Nigerian workers, Nigerian Investors and the Economy at large. The protection of these interests in a win-win manner is the primary responsibility of any responsible Government,” he added.
Obi further stressed that timely government intervention is key to preventing labour crises from spiraling into situations that worsen the plight of already struggling Nigerians.
