Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that he is willing to drop his 2027 presidential ambition if a younger, vibrant and widely accepted candidate emerges under the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking to BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, Atiku stressed that his motivation for the 2027 race is not personal ambition but the need to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative to the current leadership.
He urged young Nigerians to take active roles in politics, assuring them of his full support if one of them emerges as the party’s presidential flagbearer.
“My being in the 2027 race does not prevent anyone from contesting. If a vibrant and widely accepted younger candidate emerges, I am willing to step aside,” he said.
Atiku also dismissed suggestions that he is desperate for power, insisting that his only interest is in rescuing Nigeria from what he described as leaders who have held the country hostage.
