Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), according to a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, via Facebook on Wednesday.
Alabrah confirmed that the governor’s resignation was made alongside the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, and all PDP members of the state legislature.
The shocking development comes after months of speculation surrounding Diri’s alleged plans to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, Alabrah’s post did not specify which political party the governor intends to join next.
According to reports by The Punch, Governor Diri made the announcement during the weekly State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House, Yenagoa. It was also gathered that he has formally submitted his resignation letter to the PDP.
Insiders claim that the entire members of the State Executive Council have also resigned in solidarity with the governor, marking a major political shakeup in the state.
When contacted for clarification, Alabrah simply stated, “I cannot talk now.”
Similarly, efforts to reach the Bayelsa State PDP Chairman, Mr. Solomon Agwanana, for comments were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls at the time of filing this report.
Governor Douye Diri’s exit from the PDP marks the end of a long-standing relationship with the party under which he was first elected governor in 2020. His next political move is expected to significantly reshape the political landscape of Bayelsa State ahead of the next election cycle.
