Nigerian superstar Wizkid is facing renewed scrutiny after a series of old tweets from 2010 resurfaced showing him expressing admiration for a girl he later noted was just 14 years old.
The comments, posted when Wizkid was 19, began circulating on social media over the weekend, prompting debate about celebrity behaviour in the early days of Twitter. The singer has now deleted the tweets amid rising backlash.
In one of the posts, he wrote:
“Damn!!!…dis girl is to00000000000 cuteeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!… bt she’s 14..crying…she looks 19!.crying”
Another tweet from the same period read:
“Show was funnn!!!!…..d cute 14 yr old babe was jst screaming..ahn ahn..plenty small girls jst dey shout..kai!!…lol.so girls like me?.lol”
A third tweet added:
“Dis girl is too cute…I go bone age o…kai!!…”
The resurfacing comes at a time when old online posts from public figures are being re-examined, following the recent controversy involving Paystack co-founder Ezra Olubi.
Many social media users have described it as part of a broader “digital accountability” wave catching up with celebrities.
Reactions have been sharply divided. While some fans argue that Wizkid was a teenager himself at the time and may not have grasped the implications, others described the tweets as inappropriate, especially given the power dynamics between an emerging star and a minor.
An old remark from Banky W — who headed Empire Mates Entertainment when Wizkid was signed — also resurfaced, with many calling it tone-deaf in retrospect.
Wizkid has not issued any public statement regarding the resurfaced tweets but has quietly taken them down as online discussions continue to intensify.
