Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has dismissed suggestions that he could serve as running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Amaechi, through his media aide David Iyofor, made it clear that he is focused solely on pursuing his own presidential ambition.
The clarification follows comments by Atiku’s ally, Dele Momodu, who hinted in an interview with Punch that Atiku might consider Amaechi as a potential running mate if Peter Obi declines to join him.
Momodu also praised Amaechi’s political relevance, noting his significant role in President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2015 victory.
Iyofor, however, stated that Amaechi would not be part of any conversation aimed at positioning him as a vice-presidential candidate.
He stressed that the former Rivers State governor strongly believes the presidency should return to Southern Nigeria in 2027 and is seeking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ticket.
“Amaechi is not seeking to be running mate to anybody. He does not intend to be a presidential running mate to anybody and will not,” Iyofor said.
“Amaechi is not aware of, and will not be part of, any talk to be running mate to anybody. For emphasis, Amaechi is running to be President of Nigeria and not to be a running mate to anybody.
“Politicians are kindly advised to leave Amaechi’s name out of any discussion for presidential running mate,” he added.
