Nollywood actress and filmmaker Ini Edo has broken her silence following widespread criticism of her new movie, A Very Detty Christmas, which recently drew objections from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
CAN had expressed strong concern about the film’s title, calling it offensive and disrespectful to the Christian faith, particularly given the religious significance of Christmas.
Reacting to the controversy in a statement shared on her Instagram page, Ini Edo defended the creative choice, stressing that art is not always meant to be comfortable.
According to the actress, artistic expression is designed to provoke thought, spark conversations, and reflect the complexities of human experiences.
She noted that storytelling, especially in film, often challenges perceptions and explores societal realities, adding that such expressions should not automatically be interpreted as an attack on any belief system.
While acknowledging the concerns raised, Ini Edo emphasized the importance of creative freedom and urged audiences to engage with the work beyond its title before forming conclusions.
The debate has continued to generate mixed reactions online, with some supporting CAN’s position and others backing the actress’ stance on artistic expression and freedom in the creative industry.
