Nigeria’s Minister of Art, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, has spoken candidly about her past marriage to Abdul Samad Rabiu, describing the relationship as a defining chapter of her life that continues to shape their bond.
Musawa made the remarks during an appearance on the MIC On Podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye of Channels Television, where she reflected on their marriage and life after separation.
Speaking on the enduring connection between them, Musawa said their relationship has evolved into one rooted in family and mutual respect.
“We love each other because you love your family, obviously. But Samad is my brother. He’s my family. That’s what he is. And I’m his sister and his family, too,” she said.
The minister described Rabiu as “one of the greatest experiences” she has ever had, stressing that the end of their marriage did not erase their emotional bond or shared values.
“He is my ex-husband, but we are still family. We juggle coming from a background where, once you’re joined together, you continue to participate in each other’s lives. And so, we were married, and now we are just family,” Musawa explained.
She further revealed that the close relationship extends beyond them as individuals, noting that Rabiu’s family remains an important part of her life. According to her, her daughter, Khadija, was named after Rabiu’s grandmother.
Musawa emphasized that there is no bitterness between them, adding that mutual respect and support remain central to their relationship.
“We continue to share a deep respect and a love, and more than anything, support for each other. I’ll continue to be his greatest cheerleader,” she said.
Abdul Samad Rabiu is the founder and chairman of BUA Group, a major Nigerian conglomerate with interests spanning cement, sugar, and other key sectors of the economy.
