Nollywood actress and producer Etinosa Idemudia has urged individuals living away from their parents to make a conscious effort to stay in touch and check in regularly.
The actress shared the message via social media, reflecting on the emotional realities many parents face as their children grow older and move away, particularly those who relocate abroad.
According to Etinosa, adulthood often entails increased responsibilities, including work, marriage, and raising children. Still, she stressed that these should not lead people to neglect their parents.
She explained that many parents hope their children will not be lonely in old age, only to find that distance and life commitments create emotional gaps.
Etinosa noted that while parents may understand that their children’s lives have taken new directions, the absence can still leave them feeling lonely, especially for those whose children live overseas.
She wrote:
“If you and your siblings live very far from your parents, please try to check on your parents regularly.
I know you are busy with your new life, career and kids, but don’t forget when they were young, they gave birth thinking, ‘When I’m old, I will not be lonely. My children will surround me.’
But reality hits different. Reality hits hard, especially for older parents with children abroad.
At the end of the day, having kids because you want company in the future doesn’t always pan out that way.”
Her message has since resonated with many social media users, sparking conversations about family bonds, distance, and the emotional well-being of ageing parents.
