Venezuelan opposition leader and 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday, according to a senior US administration official.
The meeting comes amid ongoing uncertainty about Venezuela’s political future following recent US military strikes in Caracas and the capture of longtime leader Nicolás Maduro. Following Maduro’s removal, his vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, was sworn in as acting president.
Machado, who was awarded the Nobel Prize last year for her prolonged efforts to promote democracy in Venezuela, has publicly praised the US operation that led to Maduro’s capture. She even suggested she would like to share her Nobel Peace Prize with Trump in recognition of his administration’s role in supporting her cause, although the Norwegian Nobel Institute has stated that the prize cannot be transferred or shared once awarded.
Trump has acknowledged Machado’s upcoming visit and expressed that it would be a “great honour” to meet her, though when asked whether receiving her Nobel Prize would influence his stance on her potential leadership role, he has not given a direct answer.
The President has also indicated openness to future talks with acting president Delcy Rodríguez as the US navigates its involvement in Venezuela’s shifting political landscape.
The summit is expected to play a key role in shaping Washington’s approach to Venezuela’s transition and international relations moving forward.
