The US Congress has summoned former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to testify as part of an investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, with Republicans warning they could face contempt charges if they fail to comply.
The Clintons were ordered to give closed-door depositions before the House Oversight Committee, which is examining Epstein’s ties to powerful figures and how information surrounding his crimes was handled.
The development comes amid renewed pressure on President Donald Trump’s administration over transparency in the Epstein case. The Justice Department has faced backlash from Trump supporters after releasing only limited case files nearly a month past a legal deadline, fuelling conspiracy theories that Epstein was murdered as part of a cover-up.
US media reports indicate that Bill Clinton is scheduled to testify on Tuesday morning, with Hillary Clinton expected to appear on Wednesday, though neither has publicly confirmed their attendance.
“It has been more than four months since Bill and Hillary Clinton were subpoenaed to sit for depositions related to our investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s horrific crimes,” House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said last month.
He added that during that period, the former president and former secretary of state had “delayed, obstructed and largely ignored” efforts by committee staff to schedule their testimony.
