Michael Carrick Agrees Deal to Become Man United’s Interim Manager

Former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has reached a verbal agreement with the club to take over as interim head coach until the end of the season.

He will replace Darren Fletcher, who stepped in as caretaker manager following the sacking of Ruben Amorim. Fletcher, previously the club’s Under-18s boss, oversaw a 2-2 draw against Burnley before United were knocked out of the FA Cup by Brighton, with former striker Danny Welbeck scoring the winning goal.

The 44-year-old, a five-time Premier League winner with United, is no stranger to the role. He previously took charge of three matches as caretaker manager in late 2021 after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was dismissed, before Ralf Rangnick’s appointment as interim boss.

As part of the new setup, former Chelsea and England assistant manager Steve Holland is set to join Carrick’s coaching staff at Old Trafford.

United are understood to have held face-to-face talks with Carrick on Thursday, as well as with Solskjaer on Saturday. Carrick, a former United captain, is now expected to be in the dugout for Saturday lunchtime’s Manchester derby.
