R&B singer Trey Songz has filed a lawsuit against police officers over his arrest during the 2021 AFC Championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills.
The singer, whose real name is Tremaine Neverson, made the negligence claims in a lawsuit filed on Thursday, January 22, against the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD). The case stems from an altercation in the stands at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in January 2021, which led to his arrest.
At the time, police alleged that Songz became violent with officers after refusing to comply with stadium rules. He was arrested, spent a night in jail, and was investigated. However, prosecutors later declined to press charges, citing insufficient evidence that a crime had been committed.
In the new lawsuit, Trey Songz claims he was actually the victim, alleging that he was heckled, threatened and harassed by fellow football fans during the game. He further accused KCPD officers of failing to protect him, alongside private security firm Whelan Event Services and stadium sponsor GEHA (Government Employees Health Association).
According to the court filing, the defendants allegedly failed in their duty of care and instead subjected the singer to forceful treatment.
“Instead of exercising their professional duty to intervene and protect plaintiff Tremaine A. Neverson… the defendants Whelan Event Services and defendant KCPD physically assaulted, wrongfully arrested, handcuffed and detained Plaintiff Tremaine A. Neverson in jail,” the lawsuit states.
Trey Songz is now seeking unspecified financial damages, citing serious, permanent and progressive injuries to both his person and professional reputation.
The case reopens scrutiny over the controversial arrest and raises fresh questions about crowd control, police conduct, and the treatment of high-profile individuals at major sporting events.
