Lil Nas X just got some significant relief in his ongoing legal battle.
A judge has granted the rapper a two-year mental health diversion in his felony assault case, meaning he will not face jail time as long as he completes the programme and stays out of legal trouble in the meantime. If he meets both conditions, the charges could be dropped entirely.
The rapper, born Montero Hill, was brief but genuine in his response to the ruling. “I’m thankful. Just very thankful. It could have been much worse,” he said.
The stakes remain real, though. If Lil Nas X fails to complete the mental health programme or picks up any new legal issues during the two years, the felony charges will be reinstated, and he could face up to five years in prison.
The case stems from an incident in August of last year when the Grammy-winning artist was arrested on suspicion of assaulting police officers while walking through Studio City nearly naked.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges. Following the arrest, Lil Nas X was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a detail that appears to have been central to the case for mental health diversion.
His next court date is scheduled for July 29.
The diversion is not an acquittal, and the path forward still requires him to stay focused and compliant over the next two years.
But for an artist who has built a career on defying the odds and writing his own story, the ruling at least gives him the chance to do exactly that.
