Lifestyle content creator Simi Sanya has stirred conversation online after opening up about her limited cooking skills and why she believes couples should discuss such expectations before getting married.
In a clip from her appearance on the Talk Your Talk podcast, Sanya explained that she has always been upfront about not being passionate about cooking, insisting that honesty from the beginning helps avoid disappointment later in a relationship.
“You see me the way I am. You know that I don’t know how to cook. Now I’m in a relationship; you will now say let me go and be cooking for you in your house every weekend… why? Was that the plan? Didn’t I tell you before?”
According to her, cooking was never something she promised to do regularly, and she made that clear during the dating stage.
Sanya revealed that her husband, music video producer Femi Dapson, was aware of her cooking abilities before they got married and has never complained.
“Like me, in my marriage, I only know how to cook spaghetti, yam and egg, and the boy has known, and he has not fought me since the day we got married. He has been eating the spaghetti with all goodness in his heart. Did he die?”
She also stressed that food preferences and household expectations are important conversations couples should have before committing to a relationship.
“Do you like fresh food? Because I don’t have to cook. So we might not be compatible.”
The comments quickly sparked debate on social media, with some users praising her honesty and arguing that marriage should be built on clear expectations rather than traditional assumptions. Others felt cooking is an important life skill that partners should be willing to learn regardless of gender.
Sanya and Dapson got engaged in July 2025 after a public proposal. The couple tied the knot in a court wedding in Lagos on February 18, 2026, before holding their traditional and white wedding ceremonies in March.
Dapson is a well-known music video director who won Best Music Video at The Headies 2023 for directing Rema’s hit song, Calm Down.
While opinions remain divided, Sanya’s comments have once again highlighted the changing conversations around marriage roles, compatibility and the importance of discussing expectations before saying “I do.”
