Marseille chief backs De Zerbi despite his offer to step down

Roberto De Zerbi named new Olympique Marseille coach

Olympique de Marseille’s sporting director, Mehdi Benatia, has publicly supported head coach Roberto De Zerbi.

Recall De Zerbi, who recently proposed to step down amid Marseille’s domestic troubles.

Despite being third in Ligue 1, a dismal 3-1 loss to AJ Auxerre at the Vélodrome irked De Zerbi, who acknowledged, “If I’m the problem, I’m ready to leave.”

Marseille had grand ambitions early in the season to challenge Paris Saint-Germain for the title, but a new squad and tactical style have dampened those expectations.

While nine points now separate OM from PSG, Benatia insists Marseille are still in a good position.

“We’re third in the table, and it’s a young team with 12 new guys,” he told RMC Sport. “We’re in a project, and you’re not going to walk over everyone.”

Benatia fully supported De Zerbi, who joined Marseille this summer, and acknowledged the Italian coach’s commitment.

“He suits the city; it’s the love, football, and passion. He told me, ‘If I’m the problem, don’t hesitate. I don’t need money.’ He takes responsibility, and the confidence we have in him is solid.”
