Shehu Sani Slams Tinubu’s Renaming of UNIMAID as Unnecessary

Shehu Sani

Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to rename the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) after late former president Muhammadu Buhari, calling it unnecessary and ill-advised.

The announcement, made on Thursday during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) tribute session in honor of Buhari, has been met with widespread criticism, especially from students and alumni of the institution.

‘Let UNIMAID Remain UNIMAID’

Reacting via his official Facebook page, Shehu Sani expressed disappointment with the move, stating that many students and graduates of the university are displeased but hesitant to speak out due to political sensitivities surrounding Buhari’s legacy.

“Many former and present students of University of Maiduguri are not happy about the renaming of their prestigious university, but they are shy or afraid of rejecting or condemning it because of the person whose name was used,” Sani wrote.

“It’s not that difficult to say that UNIMAID should remain UNIMAID and nothing else. So far, all our airports and train stations have been renamed.”

Sani’s comments reflect a growing sentiment among Nigerians who believe that rather than renaming existing institutions, the government should focus on improving education infrastructure and building new schools and universities.

Mounting Backlash

Several current students and alumni of UNIMAID have taken to social media to express disapproval, arguing that the school’s name is an important part of its identity and heritage in Borno State and the broader Northeast region.

The backlash comes amid similar controversy over recent renamings of airports, train stations, and public institutions across the country—moves critics say prioritize symbolism over substance.

As of now, the Presidency has not issued any official response to the criticisms surrounding the renaming decision.
