Yeni Kuti Reveals Why Her Mother Remained Celibate After Leaving Fela Kuti

Why women don’t need marriage to be fulfilled — Yeni Kuti

Nigerian dancer and singer Yeni Kuti has opened up about the private life of her late mother, Remilekun Anikulapo-Kuti, who was once married to Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Kuti.

Speaking during a live programme on TVC, Yeni disclosed that after leaving Fela’s home in 1981, her mother never remarried or pursued another relationship until her passing in 2002.

According to her, Remilekun chose a life of celibacy for over two decades, a decision deeply rooted in her enduring love for Fela despite their separation.

Yeni explained:

“We have to break it down into parts; firstly, sex is very important in marriage, secondly, celibacy is a matter of choice.

My mummy moved out of my father’s house in 1981, and she died in 2002. From 1981 till she died, she never met another man; she was celibate during that period. I knew, but I could never understand.

She got cancer in between and she went for a check-up. When the doctor asked why she isn’t using it, that it’s closing up, she said, ‘Fela is the only man for me.’”

Yeni’s revelation has stirred admiration online, with many describing Remilekun’s devotion as both rare and deeply moving.
