Jessica Simpson has opened up about her long-standing battle with self-esteem, admitting she “never felt good enough” during the early years of her pop career.
Speaking in a video played at Foxwoods Resort Casino, the 45-year-old singer revealed that despite her success, she often struggled internally.
“My whole music career, I had a job — to be a pop star — and I tried. But when you’re younger, you just never feel good enough, and it’s okay to not feel good enough,” she said.
“I want everyone to have grace for themselves. I’m very good at convincing myself that my purpose is bigger than the moment I’m in.”
Jessica Simpson — who separated from her husband, Eric Johnson, earlier this year — added that the past few months have forced her to confront those insecurities head-on.
“During a really hard time in my life, I had to surrender myself to my intuition, to the light in front of me, and just focus on that,” she explained.
The singer is currently celebrating a return to music with her self-produced country album Nashville Canyon Part I and II, describing the comeback as a return to her authentic self.
Earlier this year, Jessica Simpson reflected on how the constraints of her early pop career often clashed with who she truly was.
“Coming back to music is coming back home to myself — maybe for the first time in the way I feel I deserve,” she said.
“Back in the day as a pop star, you could sing an R&B song, but I wasn’t allowed to write one. It didn’t feel authentic. My purpose had to stay intact or I would’ve been taken down. Nothing was ever good enough.”
Jessica Simpson said producing her new album required revisiting her roots.
“I had to go back. I had to rediscover the child,” she noted.
