Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has stirred reactions after openly declaring that he does not believe in prayer.
In a video shared on his Instagram page, the outspoken singer said he has never prayed in his life, describing prayer as ineffective and childish. According to Seun Kuti, people’s choices and actions, not prayers, determine the course of their lives.
“I have never prayed before in my life. I don’t know how to pray. I don’t believe it works,” he said. “Your life is your prayer. What you do with your life is your prayer. Praying in public or aloud is eye service. It is childishness.”
Kuti argued that actions carry more weight than religious rituals, insisting that personal responsibility is key to solving problems.
Questioning popular religious beliefs, he claimed that prayer contradicts the idea of a God whose will is already predetermined.
“This concept of God that most people have is why prayer is void,” he said. “If everything has already been written from beginning to end, then unless your prayer aligns with that will, it won’t be answered. Clerics won’t tell you this because they want to exploit you.”
Seun Kuti added that he prefers to confront his challenges directly rather than pray about them.
“I solve my problems. I don’t pray over my problems. If prayer solves problems, prisons and hospitals would be empty,” he concluded.
His comments have since sparked debate online, with mixed reactions from fans and critics alike.
