Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reacted to the defection of his son, Abubakar Atiku Abubakar (Abba), to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a personal decision that does not reflect his own political stance.
In a statement shared on social media on Thursday, Atiku said his son made the choice independently and cautioned against reading political meanings into it.
“The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal,” Atiku stated.
Reports had earlier emerged that Abba Abubakar had joined the APC and declared support for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election.
Responding to the development, Atiku noted that differing political views within families are not uncommon in a democratic system.
“In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming, even when family and politics intersect,” he said.
The former presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) further explained that he does not impose his political beliefs on his children or others.
“As a democrat, I do not coerce my own children in matters of conscience, and I certainly will not coerce Nigerians,” he added.
However, Atiku used the opportunity to criticise the APC-led federal government, blaming it for Nigeria’s current economic and social challenges.
“What truly concerns me is the poor governance of the APC and the severe economic and social hardships it has imposed on our people,” he said.
He reaffirmed his commitment to working with like-minded Nigerians to pursue political change.
“I remain resolute in working with patriots to restore good governance and offer Nigerians a credible alternative that brings relief, hope, and progress,” Atiku concluded.
