The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for a new minimum wage of N154,000, citing worsening economic hardship and the declining purchasing power of Nigerian workers.
The demand was outlined in a letter issued by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC), a body under the NLC.
The letter, signed by Benjamin Anthony and Olowoyo Gbenga, emphasized the “urgent necessity for an upward review of salaries and allowances” within the public service.
According to the council, the current wage structure no longer reflects prevailing economic conditions, as rising inflation, food prices, and transportation costs continue to place significant pressure on workers.
The council stated that the proposed N154,000 minimum wage is intended to help restore a reasonable standard of living for public servants and urged the Federal Government to begin negotiations without delay.
The demand comes amid growing concerns over the rising cost of living in Nigeria, with many households struggling to meet basic needs.
