The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) has issued a warning regarding their intention to initiate an indefinite strike due to the non-payment of their outstanding salaries.
This information is encapsulated in a statement that has been co-signed by SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, and NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, on Wednesday.
The unions have provided the Federal Government with a three-week ultimatum to settle their outstanding salaries.
According to the unions, the ten-day grace period that was allotted to the Federal Government for the settlement of four months of unpaid salaries to university personnel concluded on the 26th of July, 2024.
The unions have granted the Federal Government an additional three-week ultimatum commencing from Tuesday, September 17, to respond to their demands, failing which they may proceed with an indefinite strike.
They have threatened to impose a shutdown on universities and inter-university centers if payment is not received within the newly established grace period.
SSANU and NASU are advocating for, among other issues, the remuneration of four months’ withheld salaries owed to their members, enhanced compensation, earned allowances, and the execution of the 2009 agreement with the Federal Government.
The unions have accused the Federal Government of neglecting to act within the initial six-week ultimatum they had set forth in July of this year.
